WINEMAKERS NOTE
2021 was another excellent year in Nelson on the back of a run of several outstanding vintages. We enjoyed a great growing season albeit a very light vintage due to frost and Boxing Day hail.

The fruit in our 2021 Old Coach Road Nelson Pinot Noir comes from both our Rabbit Island and Brightwater vineyards where our Pinot Noir vines well are over thirty years in age and are showing great maturity and depth of flavour.

Parcels of fruit were picked incrementally in March 2021 at the peak of flavour and phenolic ripeness. The de-stemmed fruit had a brief cold maceration period before individual parcels were inoculated for fermentation. Throughout fermentation, plunging occurred twice daily and was tapered off to once daily as the fermentation finished. The young wine was drained to new, one and two-year-old French barriques for malolactic fermentation and barrel ageing. The wine was stabilised and bottled July 2022.

Generous and intense fruit. The nose offers boysenberry, cocoa and dried sage notes while the palate has warm deep plum and spicy oak flavours. Enjoy.

About Old Coach Road

Nelson’s oldest wine estate celebrated its 40th anniversary in December 2015.
Seifried Estate, with its beautiful wooden building surrounded by more than 250 hectares of vineyards, was started by Austrian-born Hermann Seifried and his New Zealander wife Agnes in 1973, when they planted their first grapes in the Moutere Valley near Nelson. They made their first wine in 1976. Seifried Estate is a proud member of the SWNZ (Sustainable Winegrowing NZ).

Old Coach Road is a selection of wines expressive of the region in which they are grown. They are easy-drinking, perfect for any occasion, and almost any cuisine you can think of. Best enjoyed young, these wines show a brightness, with plenty of fruit concentration and focus.
