Château de Valois Pomerol 2016
Frédéric Leydet runs the Château Leydet-Valentin and Château de Valois, both his family’s estates. Château LEYDET-VALENTIN is located on 8.87 hectares (21.91 acres) in Saint-Emilion, at the border with Pomerol. This farm was bought by one of Frederic’s ancestors.
As for his subtle Château de VALOIS Pomerol, Frederic LEYDET only has in mind to reach a total expression of his exceptional LEYDET-VALENTIN terroir, neighbouring famous classified growths (including Château CHEVAL BLANC 1st Classified Growth Cat. A). Unmatchable bouquets, savors and opulence can be found in Château LEYDET-VALENTIN.
The wineries are less than 3 miles from each other and they are in a top growing area of Saint-Emilion and Pomerol. They are very near to Cheval Blanc, Figeac, and Angelus. The soil is composed of sand, fine gravel, and iron. Like Cheval Blanc, Valois and Leydet-Valentin also have a high percentage of Cabernet Franc planted to best express the terroir of this area.
Frederic Leydet’s vines for this wine are just near the border of Cheval Blanc, sharing a similar soil distinguished by its iron content. The iron in the soil is particularly good for growing Cabernet Franc, and it’s the reason the Leydet works with a rather high percentage of it in comparison to others in the appellation. The final blend is 83% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Franc for the 2018 vintage. Leydet always makes the wines without any racking, fining, or filtration, giving a super classic Bordeaux. The winery is certified organic. The 2018 is dark in color, pure, vibrant and savory. Even though this has the structure to age, the wine is very open and drinking well in its youth.
About Chateau de Valois
Château de Valois dates back to 1862 when the original vineyards of Château Figeac were restructured.
Hand-harvested Merlot and Cabernet Franc is fermented in temperature controlled concrete vats for 28 days before maturing 15 months in oak barrels. Aged on lees without racking. The nose is bursting with black berries, exotic spice and hints of smoky oak and cedar. On the palate, the texture is rich and generous, with soft tannins. The finish has a good freshness and is full of lingering ripe fruit.
Certified Organic.
