Woodlands Margaret Red 2020

S$88.00

‘Margaret’ Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot

Produced since 1992 and named in honour of Heather’s French great grandmother, our ‘Margaret has been our take on the Left Bank Bordeaux blend.

‘Margaret’ is sourced entirely from the Woodlands Vineyard. The Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the slope that wraps around a 90-degree radius from the east to the north, receiving a great deal of direct sunlight from morning to mid-afternoon. The Merlot and Malbec come from the west-facing slope of deep loam soil.

The 2018 ‘Margaret’ is a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot and 10% Malbec. The colour is deep garnet with a crimson hue. The aromas evoke Christmas- perfumed blackberry, boysenberry and brambly notes. Very inviting and satisfying, and almost relaxed. The palate opens up with intertwined berry crumble, forest floor, cassis and blackberries, married with grilled chestnuts and toasted breadcrumbs. The structure is powerful, with a ripe core of tannins and a long, velvety finish.

Enjoy this wine with plum-glazed duck breast, or crispy mushrooms with garlic and thyme on creamy white bean purée.

Though this wine can be enjoyed now, it will cellar well past 2030.

96 points – James Suckling
96 points – Huon Hooke, The Real Review
96 points – James Halliday’s Wine Companion

Bright crimson in colour, the nose is extremely lush and aromatic, displaying a range of red and dark berry fruits combining with toasty French oak notes. The palate is exuberant, dense and concentrated– featuring ripe red and dark berry fruits, succulent middle palate, and plush tannin. A powerhouse of density and flavour.

About Woodlands Wines

Established in 1973 by David & Heather Watson on Caves Road in Wilyabrup, Woodlands was one of the first five vineyards to be planted in the Margaret River Wine Region. Woodlands vineyards are dry grown and maintained by hand using traditional methods. In the winery, all Woodlands wines spend up to two years in the finest French oak barrels. Each wine is made with minimal intervention, and is carefully blended by the Watson family. Aiming to create wines to emulate the great vineyards of Bordeaux, Woodlands is one of only ten Margaret River wineries with the highest possible rating from James Halliday, and the Woodlands Cabernet Sauvignon rated ‘Outstanding’ in the Langton’s Classification of Fine Wines.
