Domaine Jean Monnier & Fils Clos de Citeaux Pommard Grands Épenots Premier Cru 2020
The land of Grands Epenots is considered one of the best places for Pommard. Its soil, where the surface has a high percentage of pebbles, ensures good drainage, while at the same time the soil layer in the field is thin, which is why the underlying rocks are closer to the surface. Therefore, the Grands Epenots wines are often more mineral, structured, and long-lived compared to the surrounding fields of Pommard.
The Monnier edition comes from vines of 40 years old, located just over 300 meters above sea level on southeast-facing terraces. Here, depending on the vintage, only about 6,000 bottles are produced.
All harvesting and subsequent selection are done by hand. Fermentation occurs naturally and begins with three days of cold maceration, followed by aging in French oak, with only 20% new barrels. It is therefore a Pommard made in a rather traditional manner, requiring time to truly reveal its true self.
